Oral and maxillofacial surgeons have received more specialized training in treating conditions affecting the jaw, mouth, and face. Oral surgeons perform all types of tooth extractions, including wisdom teeth.

An Oral Surgeon must obtain a doctor of dental surgery (DDS) of Doctor or Dental Medicine ( DMD). They must also pass a licensure exam and complete an additional four to six-year surgical residency. Residencies must be accepted by the Commission on Dental Accreditation to ensure that each resident receives training in anesthesia, oral pathology, oral surgery, and any additional training that is required to practice.
