Stanford University School of Medicine and the section of Dental Medicine & Surgery is proud to support a one-year position dedicated to the advanced surgical and medical management of the head, neck, face, and jaw.
Goals & Objectives:
Our goal is to foster future dental medicine leaders in a very specialized training environment that can help address the nationwide shortage of dentists equipped to handle hospital-based care. The objective of the one-year clinical instructorship is to provide advanced training in hospital dentistry with a focus on surgical and medical management of medically complex patients. The clinical instructorship is intended to provide focused training for those who may be considering pathways to academic, hospital, private, or specialty dental careers.
The dedicated teaching faculty consists of general practitioners and board-certified oral maxillofacial surgeons. Clinical Instructors will have access to the wide breadth of other Stanford Medicine services such as Radiation Oncology and Otolaryngology. Clinical Instructors can expect annual caseload exposure to head and neck oncology, cardiothoracic surgery, organ transplant, orofacial trauma, orthognathic, oral pathology, full mouth dentoalveolar surgery and implant rehabilitation, and sleep apnea.
Duties:
The clinical instructorship runs for 365 days and begins promptly on July 1, 2025. Orientation will be held at the Stanford Palo Alto Campus the week prior. Accepted Dental Medicine & Surgery Clinical Instructors will receive a stipend pursuant to university regulations. The estimated pay range is $90,000 to $100,000.
Clinical duties for clinical instructors comprise day calls (7 a.m.-5 p.m.) and shared nights and weekends with faculty. Clinical Instructors will perform necessary consults and surgical treatment for patients at Stanford University Hospital, Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital, and adult and pediatric emergency departments. Clinical Instructors will rotate with DMS faculty in dental medicine, orofacial pain, benign jaw lesions, dental oncology, OMFS, and special needs clinics. Clinical Instructors will be responsible for coordination and follow-up care for patients. Teaching duties for Clinical Instructors comprise being a primary liaison for rotating dental residents and students.
Requirements:
- Active California Dental Board license at the start of the program
- Previous hospital training such as an intern year, GPR, or AEGD with hospital call
