The Kodiak Area Native Association has been providing patient and family focused health care and social services to Alaska Natives and our communities throughout Kodiak Island since 1966. KANA’s Dental Staff is comprised of the Dental Director, a Staff Dentist, an Oral Surgeon, an Orthodontist, three Dental Hygienists, and a Dental Health Aide Therapist who work in conjunction with dedicated Dental Assistants and ancillary staff to deliver the highest quality, team based care to patients within Kodiak and our six remote villages. Integrated Medical, Behavioral Health, and Pharmacy services within the primary care setting also facilitate an advanced support system to ensure our patients’ needs are met.

Primary Responsibilities

Continually strive to improve patient experience and quality of care by focusing on optimal patient access, continuity, team based care, clinical information systems, patient self-management, and community engagement.

Participate as an integral member of the multi-disciplinary team in the provision of Medical and other Health Care by collaborating with those professionals to provide KANA beneficiaries complete and comprehensive care.

Participate in the quality assurance review process as outlined in the KANA Dental Clinic Policy and Procedure Manual. This includes, but is not limited to, chart audit, treatment plan evaluation, and adherence to defined and accepted treatment modality and procedural protocol.

Confer with Health Administrator to formulate Dental policies and recommend procedural changes.

Confer with Health Administrator to submit budget and statistical reports used to justify expenditures for equipment, supplies, and personnel.

Communicate effectively with patients, colleagues, and other KANA staff. Practice meaningful customer service skills addressing patient and staff needs courteously and promptly.

Monitor and maintain the established protocol for patient referrals within and outside the IHS system.

Act as the Periodontal Disease Prevention Dental Officer responsible for the formulation, employment, and assessment of prevention activities.

Maintain documentation and reporting measures of prevention activities and manage the Dental Hygiene professional staff to generate an increased level of Periodontal Health within the service population.

Perform comprehensive preventive Dental Services to Alaska Natives and the people of Kodiak Island.

Perform all aspects of Periodontics, Oral Surgery, Endodontics, Fixed Prosthodontics, Removable Prosthodontics, and Pedodontics that fall within a General Dentist’s technical and educational expertise.

Perform accurate document entry and chart maintenance as outlined in the KANA Dental Clinic Policy and Procedure Manual. Accurately and promptly provide coding and billing information to KANA billing and Finance Officers and follow up insurance pre-authorizations as required or requested.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Directly supervise employees within the Dental Department. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; performance improvement; addressing complaints and resolving issues.

Minimum Requirements

DDS/DMD. Five (5) years of demonstrated success in dental clinic management. DDS/DMD with a current State of Alaska license. If not licensed in Alaska, must be able to obtain State License within 6 months of date of hire.

Intermediate knowledge of database, internet, spreadsheet, and word processing software. Must have the computer skills needed to access and document in computerized medical records.

Ability to travel to remote communities by small plane.

Must possess strong team-building and leadership skills. Must be thorough, accurate and objective in carrying out assignments, reviews and investigative responsibilities.
