Director, Division of Extramural Activities
The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Health and Human Services, seeks an outstanding scientist to lead its Division of Extramural Activities (DEA) located at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. The NIDCR is committed to finding a leader who will serve as a catalyst in promoting an equitable, diverse, and inclusive work environment that is reflective of all segments of society that the NIH serves.
The Director, DEA, provides leadership and advice in developing, implementing, and coordinating the Institute’s extramural programs and policies. The Director serves as a senior advisor to the Director and other Institute officials on issues related to policies and procedures for extramural affairs and represents the Institute on extramural program and policy issues within the NIH, the Department and with outside organizations. The Director oversees the initial scientific review of applications assigned to the Institute, including program projects, research grants in response to RFAs, training grants, cooperative agreements, and R&D contracts; oversees and coordinates the Institute's programs for extramural fellowships, training grants, career development awards, dental school curriculum development grants, NIH loan repayment awards and diversity supplements; and ensures effective and proper grants management. The Director manages and monitors all business aspects of the Institute’s grants, provides information and guidelines for grant applications, and oversees the closed session of the National Advisory Dental and Craniofacial Research Council. In addition, the Director undertakes program evaluation and planning activities in conjunction with the Institute’s programmatic Division and the Office of Science Policy and Analysis.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must possess a Ph.D., D.D.S./D.M.D., M.D., or equivalent degree, in a biomedical or related field and have in depth knowledge of NIH policies and procedures governing extramural research activities (research grants, cooperative agreements, and contracts). Applicants must be able to serve as a spokesperson for NIDCR with research institutions, science professionals, and the general public, and have proven experience in directing and managing NIH extramural activities, with the requisite administrative and interpersonal skills to meet the demands of program direction. SALARY/BENEFITS: Salary is competitive and will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate. Full Federal benefits will be provided, including retirement, health and life insurance, long-term care insurance, leave, and a Thrift Savings Plan (401K equivalent).
